A 720 score is a useful target—not a promise of approval. Lenders also look at the depth, age, limits, balances, inquiries, identity data and payment pattern behind the number.
LEARN What 720 wants you to know
- Pay every account on time. One late payment can outweigh several small “hacks.”
- Keep revolving balances low before statements close; the reported balance can matter even when you pay in full later.
- Preserve older, useful accounts when fees and risk still make sense.
- Build your own primary history. Authorized-user accounts alone may not show that you can manage debt.
- Review all three major reports and the scores a lender is likely to use. Consumer app scores may differ.
DO Your action steps
- List every card, limit, balance, statement date and due date.
- Turn on autopay for at least the minimum, then schedule your planned payment.
- Request and review your reports for genuine errors.
Do not open accounts only to chase a score. A strong file is stable, accurate and affordable.
